Options

At Samuel Ryder Academy, Key Stage 3 is a three year stage of education. Throughout those three years, we provide a richly broad and balanced curriculum that also recognises individual passions and needs.

Year 8 Options

In February, students in Year 8 select options to start in September, when they are in Year 9. They have to study English, Mathematics, Science, PE and Religion & Society, either Geography and/or History and either French or Spanish (with an option to do both). In addition, our dedication to a broad and balanced curriculum for all our students means that within the further subjects they select, they must include a technology and art subject (some of which they have not previously studied, expanding on the curriculum offer in Year 7 and 8). This approach allows our students to build the necessary knowledge and skills for their future education.

Year 9 Options

Also in February, students in Year 9 select options for their GCSE courses in Years 10 and 11.  Again, students have to study English, Mathematics, Science, PE (non-examined) and Religion & Society (non-examined).  In addition, students must choose four additional subjects.  It is important for students to choose wisely having considered his or her own aptitudes and abilities and decide which subjects suit them best, taking into consideration other factors such as what they are hoping to study beyond Year 11.
