Mock General Election
Posted on 04/07/2024We hosted a mock general election today to give our students the opportunity to vote and make their voices heard. Our A Level politics students will count and analyse the results, which will be shared with our students.
“On the 4th of July, people across the United Kingdom have visited polling stations to vote for who they want to run the country. In an effort to give students a political experience, SRA ran a mock election. Each form was given a ballot paper for them to cross which party they would like to ‘get in’. Some students (from Primary and Secondary) voted in the library in the traditional voting stalls instead. Afterwards, all of the slips were put into ballot boxes and collected by the Year 12 team who helped run the event. On our ballot sheets we had the selection to vote from the main five parties and their leaders: Conservatives, Labour, Liberal Democrats, Reform UK and the Green Party. Additionally, in class beforehand, we got to read through each party’s manifestos and learn more about the election: from how constituencies work to the benefits and consequences of each party. Overall, the election was a fun event which many students enjoyed doing. It gave us a lot of knowledge into how the country is and can be run and so much more.”

“This July 4th adults across the country cast their votes in the much-anticipated election. This is a crucial part in maintaining a healthy democracy in the UK, and ensuring everybody has their say. Here at Samuel Ryder Academy, students also get the chance to participate in the day, by voting in a mock election held in the school library. Students were given detailed information on what each party planned to do in different areas if they won, and then they were handed a ballot to vote on. This practice informs students on current politics and allows them to form an unbiased opinion which is very important for their future.”
