A-level Geography Field Trips
Posted on 06/01/2022The Year 12 and 13 geography students have taken part in 2-day trips in November and December to experience a variety of data collection techniques in preparation for the NEA component of the A-level (coursework).
The human geography day was all about regeneration and character of place in Kings Cross, Granary Square and Camden (which included some great food!) We collected data such as conducting questionnaires asking insiders and outsiders their opinions on anything from the infrastructure to the social inequality of the area and gathering statistics about the pedestrian count in the area to the smell and noise level. We had a great talk from the Kings Cross Visitor Centre which was highly informative and helped to strengthen our knowledge learnt in our Changing Places topic.
A week later we took another field trip to the River Chess in Rickmansworth and Chesham. This helped our understanding of the water cycle and consolidated our physical geography data collection techniques. We visited 4 different locations and measured aspects like the river gradient, wetted perimeter, velocity, soil infiltration rate and more. Everyone had wellington boots and got in the river on the day, however there was only one student who accidently fell in the river which was thankfully at the end of the day!
It is always great getting outside the classroom and placing what we have learnt into practice. Thank you to the geography teachers for organising those lovely trips.
