Samuel Ryder Academy MFL Week 2020

Posted on 09/11/2020

We celebrated MFL Week a little differently to previous years but that doesn't mean there was any less enthusiasm for languages across the school - far from it!  From quizzes and games to fun and engaging lessons led by our bilingual students, it was a great way to start the second half of the autumn term.

During lunchtimes our secondary students were able to take part in some fun activities including a game of petanque for Year 7, Kahoot quizzes for Year 8 and 9 and a spelling bee for Year 10.

Our bilingual students amazed our MFL department by preparing and teaching a lesson in their native language to fellow students. Welsh, Guajarati, Japanese, Greek, Urdu, Scottish Gaelic and sign language all featured during the week.

Our RS and Drama faculties also incorporated MFL week into lessons by creating some fantastic opportunities for the students to practice other languages.

For our primary students, the week began with a video of students who shared greetings in their native languages.  These included Chinese, Polish, Italian and Arabic to name but a few! The register was taken in a different language every day and all the students joined in with some French songs and fitness routines which they loved.

Year 5 had lots of fun playing boules and Year 1 enjoyed making art work in the style of Paul Klee.

The week ended with our primary students dressing up in the colours of different flags and it was wonderful to see so many different countries represented.

It was an outstanding week celebrating different languages and cultures across our school.
