Welcome to the Scholars' Education Trust Website

The Sir John Lawes Academies Trust was created in 2012, when the existing academy trust for Sir John Lawes School took over responsibility for the sponsorship of Samuel Ryder Academy.   In 2016 the trust was joined by Robert Barclay Academy, a 11-18 mixed comprehensive in Hoddesdon, and Harpenden Academy, a primary school for children aged 4-11. December 2017 saw the trust renamed to Scholar's Education Trust to reflect to the shared contribution that all member schools make to the academy trust.

The Trust aims to ensure that the skills and experience of staff at all schools are maximised to ensure that the students in our care receive the best education possible.  Expertise in teaching and learning is shared across the entire trust and support systems are centralised to enable the schools to achieve maximum efficiency from all resources.

Although all schools retain their own identities, the central “DNA” of the Trust is shared across the member organisations so that whichever school you are in you will know you are a part of the Scholars' Education Trust and that the values and priorities of everyone you meet will be the same.

Sir John Lawes  first gained experience of sponsoring a new academy through working with The Bushey Academy (previously Bushey Hall School); a project for which SJL were Educational Consultants.  This positive experience meant that, when approached by Herts LA to take on the opportunity of creating the new Samuel Ryder Academy, the governors and staff of SJL were ready to rise to the challenge.  The new project also involved working in the primary sector for the first time which only added to the attraction.

The aims of the Trust are reflected in the aims of the schools and are summed up in the Sir John Lawes ACE:

Achievement - Academic, artistic, sporting, cultural and in other forms with a focus on teaching and learning.

Care - For students, staff and others within and beyond the school community.

Excellent Standards - In Manners, honesty, personal integrity and uniform.
